Kite Flying, Community awareness and collective responsibility
The message also acknowledged and appreciated the strict policy and firm actions taken by the City Police Officer, Sardar Ghias Gul Khan, who is implementing special directions issued by Chief Minister Punjab, Ms. Maryam Nawaz. These measures reflect the government’s serious commitment to safeguarding citizens, maintaining law and order, and preventing avoidable tragedies.

Today, after the Holy Mass at Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Gujranwala, a special awareness message was delivered to the Christian community, highlighting the serious harms of kite flying, especially when practiced irresponsibly and withou proper safety measures. The message aimed to educate people about the social, moral, and legal consequences of this activity and to encourage responsible citizenship in light of recent government directives.
Kite flying, once considered a harmless recreational activity, has unfortunately turned into a dangerous social issue. The use of chemical and metal-coated strings (commonly known as dor) has caused numerous tragic incidents, including severe injuries, loss of precious human lives, damage to property, and harm to animals and birds. Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and children have often been the victims of these unsafe practices. The message emphasized that such activities not only endanger lives but also disturb public peace and order.
During the address, the community was reminded that Islam, Christianity, and al major religions strongly advocate for the protection of human life, respect for law, and care for the environment. Any activity that puts lives at risk goes against these shared moral values. Parents were especially urged to guide their children responsibly and discourage them from engaging in illegal kite flying practices.
The community was encouraged to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies, report illegal activities, and support preventive efforts rather than resisting them.
Furthermore, it was emphasized that law enforcement alone cannot solve this issue. Community awareness and collective responsibility are equally important. Religious institutions, families, educational centers, and civil society must work together to change mindsets and promote safe, lawful alternatives for recreation. The Church, as a moral and social institution, plays a vital role in guiding people toward responsible behavior and peaceful coexistence.
The address concluded with a strong appeal to the community to become agents of peace and safety, setting a positive example for society. Citizens were reminded that true enjoyment and celebration should never come at the cost of another person’s life or well-being. Respect for the law, cooperation with authorities, and care for one another are essential for building a safe and harmonious Gujranwala.
Through such awareness efforts, it is hoped that kite flying-related accidents can be reduced, public safety can be ensured, and culture of responsibility an obedience to the law can be strengthened for the greater good of society.
